Health Care Providers Support Paid Sick Leave

Health care providers advise patients to stay home from school and work when they are sick. Unfortunately, there are millions of workers in Ontario without access to paid or even job-protected sick leave.

Evidence shows that providing paid sick days reduces the duration of illness and places a lower burden on healthcare resources. When people do not have paid sick days and are forced to work through illness, there is increased risk of virus transmission. People without access to paid sick leave also face barriers to accessing routine preventative care.

The Ontario Medical AssociationDoctors of Nova Scotia and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association have all called on employers to stop requiring medical notes.

Health care providers in Ontario are now calling for amendments to the Employer Standards Act to allow all employees access to paid sick leave, while prohibiting employers from requiring sick notes.
