Join HPAP for a Workshop on Health Advocacy Through Social Media & Op-Ed Writing

Jan 30, 2013

Join us for a capacity-building workshop for HPAP members and allies, focused on strategies for health advocacy through social media and op-ed writing. We will also use this session and the meeting to follow to generate campaign ideas as a group.

When: Saturday, Feb 16, 2013, 1-3 PM
Where: Centre for Social Innovation – Regent Park (585 Dundas St E, Toronto)

We will be joined by two highly-experienced speakers, Dr. Ritika Goel, and Farah Mawani.

Ritika Goel is a family physician in Toronto, with a Master of Public Health. She is on the Steering Committee for a number of progressive health advocacy groups including the Medical Reform Group and Health for All. She has extensive experience organizing around health equity for the uninsured population in Canada and has been a leader in recent mobilization around cuts to the Interim Federal Health Program, which have left refugees in Canada without health care coverage.

Farah Mawani is a PhD candidate in Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. She has global research, writing, and teaching experience in inequalities in global mental health, social and cultural determinants of mental health, immigrant and refugee mental health, and community-based research.  Farah also recently founded Farahway Global, a Social Media, Public Engagement, Human Rights and Health Agency. It builds on Farah’s experience directing the social media and public engagement components of Free the Hikers, which played a large role in freeing Josh Fattal, Shane Bauer, and Sarah Shourd, held hostage in Iran for 2 years and 2 months.
